How To Make Sadza - Simple Recipe
This simple how-to make sadza article will give you a recipe that is sure to work every single time. I can assure you that almost every African learnt how to cook sadza by just observing and there was never a documented recipe to follow… until this one. So everyone makes it differently depending on where on the African continent they grew up. Sadza (Shona) is the staple food in Zimbabwe and is referred to as 'Isitshwala' in Ndebele and 'Pap' in South Africa. It's common across the African continent so you can imagine folks in Ghana may not make it the same way folks in Zimbabwe do. In this article, I will share how I learned how to make it in Zimbabwe and have done so for several weeks with consistently awesome results.
My method is quite simple even the worst cook you have ever met can follow it and become an overnight pro… So let's get started.
Items Required:
- Multi-grain roller mealie-meal (because I'm a health enthusiast)
- Water
- Cooking Pot
- Wooden spoon/ Mugoti/ Uphini (click HERE to buy online)
- Wooden Whisk/ Musika/ Uphehlo (click HERE to buy online)
- Cup
- Stove or a fire will do too
Steps:
- Add 2 cups of whole-grain mealie-meal into a pot
- Add 4 cups of cold water and stir until all the mealie-meal is mixed with the water
- Place the pot over a hot stove under medium heat and stir until boiling. Sometimes during this stage, the mix could become lumpy... you can use a metal spoon to break the lumps but the best tool to use is uphehlo (Ndebele) or musika (Shona). Just insert the end with the wire into the mix and use your open palms to turn it back and forth like you are trying to start a fire using a stick. repeat until all the lumps are gone
- Occasionally stir the pot so that the mealie-meal does not settle at the bottom or become lumpy
- Allow it to boil for about 1hour to ensure the mealie-meal is well cooked
- Add one cup of mealie-meal and mix over low heat
- Allow the mix to cook for about 5-10 minutes while occasionally stirring to ensure the mix doesn't burn
- Add another half a cup of mealie-meal
- Mix and stir for about 5 minutes and then turn off the stove and put the lid back on the pot
- Allow to sit for another 5-10 minutes and then serve.
This recipe serves 4 adults. So I am not a chef nor do I have any type of professional training but this is the best way to make sadza for any beginner even one that has never eaten sadza before.
I'm sure you may have tried other recipes... Please tell me, in the comments, how my method/recipe turned out for you. Would also love to know if this was your first attempt.
